Astoria Readers Theatre (ART), a new performance company and an offshoot of Pier Pressure Productions, will be presenting John Patrick Shanley's Outside Mullingar, directed by Susi Brown, at 120 10th Street in Astoria, Oregon, on October 12th -- a vibrant script for the reader's theater format. Two performances, 3:30pm and 7:30pm, are designed to coordinate with Astoria's Second Saturday Art Walk.
Outside Mullingar, written by the Pulitzer Prize winning playwright of Doubt, and the film Moonstruck, tells the story of two introverted misfits in their 40s, each living on their respective family's adjacent - and dwindling - farms. Their entire lives have been spent alongside each other but at a distance, and it is obvious to others, but not shy Anthony (played by Marcus Liotta), that he and Rosemary (portrayed by Nancy Montgomery), are a match. To complicate matters, the two families are embroiled in a rather odd land feud. It is a comically charming tale of the complications of life and the ups and downs of love. The parents of these eccentric souls will be played by Bill Honl and Bonnie Lively. Other members of this inaugural performance from ART are Sally Musemeche, Karen Bain and Slab Slabinski.
This production of Outside Mullingar is a kickstarter of sorts, the hopeful first of many Readers Theater productions from ART. The format has proven to be an invigorating and accessible mode for theater; for sharing stories that help us recognize ourselves in each other. Seating in this particular venue is quite limited. Tickets for this first event will be available online through the website of longtime arts supporter Columbia River Coffee Roaster: https://shop.
